This section will focus on the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by several processes.

  • Inadequate intake of dietary vitamin D (technically it is a group of hormones).
  • Inadequate exposure to sunlight.
  • Age related decrease sun exposure.
  • As a result of aging, some starting around age 62 are more likely to stay inside. When going outside and using sun screens which they are more likely to, they will get less vitamin D. Patients in nursing homes, unless ambulatory and independent, are rarely taken outside the facility. In the absence of supplementation, these are also at risk of vitamin D deficiency symptoms.

  • Religious affiliation related decrease sun exposure.
  • Some, because of religion, totally cover their bodies when in public. This leads to the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.

  • Overuse of sunscreen protection:
  • Some in an extreme desire to avoid sunburn and subsequently over protect them selves with sun screen. The result is they get little or no benefit from the sunlight on their skin. Note: By properly hydrating ( Learn How at Water Cures.org )and boosting GSH prior to sun exposure, you can prevent sunburn and at the same time boost your GSH.

  • Diseases and conditions that can limit vitamin D absorption
  • Fat malabsorption syndromes
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Liver diseases that impair the absorption of vitamin D from food.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Those with inflammatory bowel disease or Crohn's disease and especially those with a small bowel resection are at risk.

  • Conditions that can impair conversion of vitamin D into forms that can be metabolized
  • liver disorders
  • kidney disorders
  • some hereditary disorders
  • Dark skin
  • Those with dark skin will produce less vitamin D than those with light skin.

The farther north a dark skinned person lives the greater the risk of a vitamin D deficiency.

One study found that over 40% of African American women between the ages of 15 and 49 were deficient of vitamin D. The comparison group of white women, there were only 4% of deficient.

    Canadians are at greater risk.

  • Mothers who only breast fed their infants.
  • Any infant and especially African-Americans who are exclusively breast fed and are not getting vitamin D supplementation are at high risk of vitamin D deficiency. If the baby gets little sun, the risk is increased.

  • Toddlers who are only fed milk substitutes without vitamin D supplementation.
  • Unless the milk is fortified, they may not be getting enough.

  • Obesity
  • Since vitamin D is fat soluble, it can accumulate in body fat and is less available for other parts of the body.

  • This means the vitamin D deficiency symptoms are observed more often in the obese.

Vitamin D deficiency results in impaired mineralization of the bones, bone softening (osteomalacia) and may result in bones becoming brittle and fragile (osteoporosis). In children, it can result in ineffective calcification of and softening of the bones. Historically it resulted in bow legs. This is a condition known as rickets.

Another impairment of bone minerilaization is emerging. It is known as Fosamax Fractures in some medical papers. Bisphosphonates like Fosamax and Boniva have been linked to a very bad side effect. Increased bone fractures and increased healing time for those who do get fractures.

If you have any of the above or if you do not get enough sun light, you will be at risk of having the vitamin D deficiency symptoms.

Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms

Hypovitaminosis D Osteopathy

Hypovitaminosis D osteopathy is a group of vitamin D deficiency symptoms. It is the result of a lack of vitamin D that helps the body maintain healthy calcium balance.

In our bones, there is a process of the bones basically taking themselves apart and put themselves back together in a continuous process.

Calcium also works inside the cells of the body.

It helps make the hormones that make sure calcium goes into bone as needed and not into other tissues.

The symptom take years to produce any noticeable affect.

For the first 5 years of not getting enough calcium there will be no symptoms.

The next 5 to 30 years of not getting enough calcium could be noted by a bone scan. There will not necessarily be unusual fractures or breaks. The exception is the Fosamax fractures where there are unusual fractures.

In the end stages, vitamin D deficiency symptoms will be noted in broken bones or reduced height.

Other Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms

Other symptoms take a considerable period of time to develop. Although these are diseases in their own right, they are associated with vitamin D deficiency. Indeed, not enough vitamin D may be the cause of these diseases.

  • Colon cancer in men
  • Breast cancer in women before the start of menopause
  • Prostate cancer and especially in African-American men
  • Increased risk of developing insulin-dependent diabetes
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (especially in the dark-skinned persons, Muslim women who are observant, and Northern United States, Canada, Northern Europe, Siberia, and or Alaska residents.

Vitamin D helps reduce these risks.

Most are not aware of vitamin D deficiency until it is too late. Because it takes so long to develop symptoms, it is important to start right now.

Vitamin D deficiency is also a glutathione deficiency because vitamin D is one of the co-factors that helps the body make glutathione.
