Strep throat accounts for about 5 to 10 percent of sore throats in adults and 15 to 40 percent of sore throats in children.
If you suspect you have strep or were in contact with someone who had it and now you have a severe sore throat, the doctor may be the next stop for you.
They will first do a rapid strep test. This may be followed by a strep culture. If you are found to be positive for strep throat, you will be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin. The most important concern here is to prevent rheumatic fever which can cause permanent heart valve damage.
