Do you remember the polycythemia rubra vera news reports around the year 2008. There were 131 people near Tamaqua, Pennsylvania who got the rare cancer. There were 33 other cases of PV in Luzerne and Carbon counties, Pennsylvania. Did you know that it is probably caused by toxic waste? It keeps happening all over. The one that stands out was in about the North East Pennsylvania toxic dump locations and the people who lived nearby. There is now science to prove toxins are an enemy insurgent in our bodies working against our health.
This also means the environmental toxin / polycythemia rubra vera connection now has a scientific basis supporting it.
Imagine your watching a melding of several top TV shows.
The CSI have completed their work. This time it was not CSI Miami, not CSI Las Vegas, rather it was CSI: The Body. The team collected the evidence regarding the spreading disease. The evidence (study) from North East Pennsylvania demonstrated a higher than normal number of cases of the disease in relationship to the Super Fund toxic waste dump sites of the area.
The perp (perpetrator) of the disease is concluded to be unknown enemy insurgents.
It is not known exactly which toxin is the insurgent but numerous toxins are suspect. And what is the goal of this insurgent inside the body of some?
Polycythemia Vera (PV) is a rare blood disorder in which the number of red blood cells increases in the body. The increased production of red blood cells could be caused by several processes.
One of the underlying causes could be be due to a primary process in the bone marrow called Myeloproliferative Syndrome. Another cause is low oxygen levels or even malignancy.
This acquired disorder of the bone marrow also can cause the overproduction of white blood cells and platelets.
First, an apology about this polycythemia rubra vera information. Many will find this hard to understand. To be honest, I had to read many of the studies several times as gene science is as much geek to me as it is no doubt to you. However, please hang in there. You should see a common thread if you or a loved one is suffering from this or a related disease. Also, I am not a doctor. I am a nurse, a scientist, a concerned citizen and if you live in North East Pennsylvania, a neighbor.
Men seem to get it more often than women, it almost never hits under the age of 20, rarely under 40 and the average age it hits is at 60.
The recently released Pennsylvania study points to chemical exposure as a causation factor.
Many websites like the Mayo Clinic indicate that there is no cure and there is nothing that can be done to prevent it from happening. Literature on PubMed suggests otherwise. There are steps that can be taken to protect and possibly to help the condition. Before considering the options, first the basics.
Polycythemia Vera is classified into two major groups.
- Polycythemia Vera - Primary Polycythemia
- Non Vera
- Secondary Polycythemia

Note There are over 100K Studies related to glutathione and diseases. At this writing I have not found any that directly looked at polycythemia rubra vera as being treated with the glutathione boosting products. However by doing sub searches, the information below came up.
Anecdotally we know that many by boosting glutathione have successfully put their leukemia in remission. We know that one GSH boosting product used in conjunction with chemo therapy shortens the duration of therapy, enhances the chemo effects and reduces radiation side effects.
This is important as sometimes PV can turn into leukemia. Rare but there is a connection.
That is not the actual name of the study. This is just to draw attention to polycythemia rubra vera since it is rare, unless you are one of those who have it.
The February 2009 issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention article, reported on by Newswies.com pointed to the connection between environmental toxins and the number of people affected by this rare disease.
The Pennsylvania counties, Luzerne, Carbon and Schuylkill are known areas for residents being exposed to hazardous waste materials.
The risk of having polycythemia rubra vera was found to be 4.3 times more likely than those in the comparison areas considered in the study. There was no link to other types of cancer in this area.
The author, Dr Hoffman said, “This study may prove that diagnosis of this cancer based solely on clinical criteria may be inaccurate. The frequency of this form of bone marrow cancer could be specifically related to the environment.”
The study also pointed to a connection of environmental pollutants having a role in causing bone marrow cancers.
The important question now: Is there a treatment, are there preventative steps to take and what are they.
To look for a cure, treatment, or how to prevent it will require looking at the science behind it. This is gene and stem cell stuff so hang in there. Lets go back to our CSI team and watch, listen and see what they are seeing.
One of the enemy insurgents, the chemical toxins has left a piece of evidence behind that helps identify where he has done damage. To find out more, the CSI scientist are trying to find and report evidence on the crimes of these enemy insurgents do to the body.
They do not arrest or even prosecute them. They only report the evidence. When they find the evidence, they turn it over to the law enforcement, which the equivalent for our body would be the Medical Establishment.
What we need is a version of the CTU, the Counter Terrorist Unit to help in this battle.
Remember, the insurgent is a toxin that is inside our body. The CSI team is the scientist that study this. The law enforcement is the health care system. They are the ones that arrest incarcerate the enemy insurgents.
In one of their reports to the medical CSI reported on this piece of evidence found at the scene of a crime inside the human bodies where the insurgents have done the damage.
What they found is called Jak2.
A study of Jak2 found that treatment of the Jak2 with the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine decreased cell growth or expression of cyclin D2 (prostaglandin D2 does several things including involvement in cell growth) and increased expression of the cell cycle inhibitor called p27.
What in tarnations is the JAK2 let alone the V617F version of it spoken of in the study?
JAK2 V617F is a mutation and is the most common genetic defect observed in blood malignancies. It can be found in essential thrombocythemia (ET), polycythemia vera (PV) and primitive myelofibrosis (PMF).
Although scientist are still arguing whether it is the initial cause of these diseases or not in these 3 myeloproliferative disorders (MPD). They do agree that the malignancies are considered to arise from a defect in a hematopoietic stem cell (HSC).
This means that the mutant is now believed to be caused by an enemy insurgent, the toxin ingested by the humans. Worse than the middle eastern kind, this insurgent was a sleeper agent right in the back yard, literally the back yard of our homes. It is now believed that the enemy insurgent is only one of a number of toxic chemicals.
If you have followed this so far, then the threads to note are genes, antioxidants, and NAC and their relationship to polycythemia rubra vera.
Studies show that oxidative stress is associated with gene mutation.
Thus, glutathione is more than just an antioxidant. Of the 27 main functions of glutathione, it protects cells from mutation and helps the body destroy mutant cells and dispose of the bodies, so to speak.
The last sentence in the Oxidative Stress and DNA Damage induced by Heavy Metals was very telling. It said, "This mutagenic effect was largely caused by oxidative stress since blocking the production of hydryl radicals significantly reduced the mutation rate as well as delayed the cell death."
So like a secret agent, glutathione is working to eliminate free radical insurgents in our body. At the same time, they undo the damage the free radicals do. Then they dispose of the evidence of the work they have done. Jack Bower can not hold a candle to these internal counter terrorist units in each and every cell of our body.
However, these protective agents need our support. Not from congress, not from your local government. They need support from you. They need the help that can only come from your dietary intake.
Science knows that glutathione detoxifies the body. It rids it of the many toxins we are exposed to. So it could possibly prevent the disease when we get older if we in effect hire the Jack Bower of CTU inside our bodies to go to work destroying the insurgents. Doing so, he could prevent the release of the deadly polycythemia rubra vera.
Next we will explore the prognosis, polycythemia rubra vera symptoms and what you can do.

The Way to Make More GSH For Free
Glutathione has a high affinity for water. Simply put, if we are dehydrated our bodies may not make as much as they could. Or, what we do make may be less effective.
Usually there is something more than just being dehydrated. Often there is a condition called fluid and electrolyte imbalance, less than bodies needs. There is a simple, easy and inexpensive way to correct this, allowing your body to produce even more GSH.
The Water Cures Protocol really works. Give it a try today.
It is simple, easy, sustainable and affordable (the salt should cost less than $10 a year).
And like GSH, it will help with over 76 different diseases and conditions.
