The findings suggest, the authors said, "…that intraocular pressure increase, which characterizes most glaucoma's, is related to oxidative and degenerative processes …"
"This supports the theory that glaucomatous damage is the pathophysiological consequence of oxidative stress."
In other words, Glaucoma is the result of both free radical damage and reactive oxygen species.
The authors also said that genetic factors contribute to the process. Genetics could make a person more prone to getting primary glaucoma.
It is the oxidative stress that is primarily the cause of glaucoma-associated lesions.
When the blood flow is diminished as a result of increased pressure, the tissues experience hypoxia. This may also contribute to the induction of oxidative damage.
The conclusion wast that …"on the whole, these findings support the hypothesis that oxidative damage is an important step in the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma and might be a relevant target for both prevention and therapy."
The role of oxidative stress in glaucoma.
Mutation Research. 2006 Mar;612(2):105-14. Epub 2006 Jan 18. The authors wrote that there is more and more evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) are the main reason for the development of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Glaucoma is the leading cause of reversible blindness world wide.
They stated that it is oxidative DNA damage that is most notable in those with glaucoma compared to those who do not have glaucoma.
They cited the proof for this and noted that the TM (trabecular meshwork) carries on remarkable antioxidant activities. These activities are mainly with superoxide dismutase-catalase and glutathione.
Like the previous article, they felt the vascular changes contribute to the resulting oxidative damage. They identified two solutions.
