Toxins Defined

Toxins are poisonous substances produced by plants, animals or other living organism. In medical terms, a toxin would not include other substances that are toxic or poisonous in nature. These would be known as toxicants or the plural...toxics...is acceptable.

So, venom would be a toxin as would the deadly red tide and any poison produced by a micro-organism that causes illness. The word toxin refers to the source of its production.

Additionally, a toxin would also cause disease. Toxins induce an immune response when present in low concentrations in the body. When the human cells are exposed to a toxin, they begin the production of antibodies.

Toxins can cause disease on contact, when absorbed by body tissues and react with the cells.

An example of a minor Toxins is a bee sting. According to Steadman's Medical Dictionary, tetanus toxin, tetanotoxin; the neurotropic, exotoxin of Clostridium tetani and the cause of tetanus is one of the most poisonous substances known.

The word toxic means any poisonous substance. Some substances, like mercury are toxic to humans, even in small amounts. Additionally, some substances, again like mercury give off gasses which are also toxic.

So, What are Toxicants?

This means that just about everything else that is poisonous is a toxicant. This would include things like mercury, lead and pesticides.

You Say Tomato, I say...
