The Wellness Triangle

An essential aspect of anti-aging is the wellness triangle. It has two different definitions. The first is based on the 1948 Constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO) definition. It is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. It is not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.

This definition was written during a time of scientific denial of spirituality. Maslow failed to identify the spiritual need of man in his hierarchy of human needs. Yet now it is well recognized that people will put their faith above their own life.

The new triangle includes Spirit with Mind and Body. Perhaps there is a close relationship between social health and spiritual health. The spirit is the force that actuates our mind and body. It is the sum total of our drives, motivations, and emotions that make us who we are and act the way we do.

For the sake of argument, we will consider both.

The triangle is the balance of physical health, mental health and social or spiritual health.

Science has demonstrated that our over health and wellness is dependent on all three. More importantly, it seems all three are synergistic. Maintaining any one helps promote the other two.

Social Health

    Social health is the ability to act harmoniously with nature, family and neighbors in the community we live in.

    Physical health and mental health both have strong connections to social relationships and friendships.

    A Mayo Clinic report on health indicated that close friends can benefit both physical and mental health. Close friends who we can count of in times of need can help with the stress of life. According to the book, How Not to Be My Patient: A Physician’s Secrets for Staying Healthy and Surviving any Diagnosis says that mounting evidence from sociologists, psychologists and medical research suggests that strong social support....can help a person live longer.

    Did you note that one of the ways friendships helps relates to mental health.

    Spiritual health relates to finding meaning in our life and living a life of purpose that is harmonious with our values, beliefs and resolves.

Mental Health

    called emotional wellness, it is being aware, sensitive, and accepting of and managing ones feeling and emotions. Mental health makes it possible to cope with the stressors, manage and maintain relationships (family, friends, and social networking) and to be responsible for what we say and do.

Physical Health

    Physical health entails more than freedom from disease. It includes wellness promotion. Optimal physical health requires appropriate exercise, proper dietary intake, and health maintenance.

The Glutathione Connection

    Glutathione (GSH) is an essential part of both mental health and physical health. Because of the synergistic aspect of the triangle, promoting two enhances the ability to self promote the third,

    There is a second aspect of social health promotion. Finding something that works promotes social networking and new friendships. This is a rather curious effect and benefit. We tend to talk to those who will understand what have gone through.

    So GSH can even help with the third part of the wellness triangle.
