He first noticed the the whites of his eyes had turned yellow 6 weeks earlier. Other symptoms included intense and worsening itching, nausea, generalized fatigue, loss of energy, and weight loss. There was nothing notable in his past health history. He did not drink alcohol or use illicit drugs. He was not on any prescription medications.
