One of the outstanding Lou Gehrig's Disease, ALS or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis symptoms is low CG Syndrome. It is new to the list of diseases or conditions that are associated with being helped by glutathione. Since there is little evidence that it actually works, it is not being considered the 69th disease at this time.

What is important with the latest study is that they are starting to look at the glutathione connection. This means that it may be possible that boosting your glutathione can slow the progression of the disease.

Here is the research available at present on one of the many amyotrophic lateral sclerosis symptoms, the low CG syndrome.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Symptoms and GSH

The Familial ALS Connection in J Neurol Sci. 2005 May 15 looks at the cause. In particular, there is a mutation that seems to be part of the problem.

Then in August of the same year....

GSH Production is looked at in Neurochem Res. 2005 Aug

It is a study of glutathione S-transferase pi expression in central nervous system of subjects with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Postmortem studies revealed that (what is now called low cg syndrome ) contributes to motor neurons damage.

Then in May, 2009 a study looked at the Role of Glutathione in the disease.

They conclude that failure of the regulation of the GSH pathway may contribute to motor neuron vulnerability. They identify this pathway as a target for therapeutic intervention.

This means that supplementing the diet with the cofactors of glutathione may help. There is one word of caution here.

With so many products on the market that claim and some which actually do boost GSH, there are very sound reasons that not all available products should be used. In some cases, they can cause other problems that could result in worse outcomes.

Having seen and worked with numerous patients dealing with this through the years, it would be best if you only attempt this route with the help of a MD who can watch the labs and make sure the critical balance is maintained.

Although I am a fan of the NAC versions of products, they may not be the best in this particular treatment. Again, only go this route with a MD experienced in treating patients with glutathione boosting products.

The the glutathione boosting med that the doctors would probably choose is medicare approved for tube feedings.

Also note, if you start the supplements, you may need to stay on them the rest of your life. At the very least, you should taper off the discontinuance should you stop using them. This advice is based on anecdotal evidence shared from a doctor and not based on studies.
